Unit 2435-QY

 Fall 2019|5 Weeks|Individual Project

I built this for my final project in freshman sculpture class. Marble machines have always fascinated me and it has been a longtime dream of mine to design and build one.

The piece uses a screw gear to reset the balls to the top of the track.

Reciprocating Pin.

Features a reciprocating pin run by a fly wheel to push the balls up over the ledge.

Completed Form.

Screw Gear.

Elevator Wheel.

Utilizes a rotating wheel with ball slots to continue the motion.

Fabrication Process.

Resetting Mechanism.

I then designed the mechanism to reset the balls to the top of the tack.

Started with the track design.

Concept Sketches.

I started by doing quick sketches of the overall look and the different mechanisms I wanted to include.

The Main Assembly.

Track building.

Gluing the parts to the main form.

Main Form.

Fabricating the track pieces involved cutting 1/4in mild steel rod and bending it into the main form. Then welding on the support rods. The struts were laser cut MDF and the rails were 16ga steel wire.
